The Sara-Bongo-Bagirmi languages, also called the Bongo-Bagirmi languages, are the major branch of the Central Sudanic languages within the proposed Nilo-Saharan family, comprising about forty languages spoken across the Central African Republic, Chad, South Sudan, Sudan and neighboring countries. Its principal subdivisions include the Bagirmi, Sara, Bongo-Baka, Kara, Kaba and Vale languages; the family is for the most part poorly studied, with little scholarly agreement on its internal classification, though its proto-language is thought to have originated in the Bahr el Ghazal region of southwestern South Sudan near the border with the easternmost Central African Republic, and its western Sara languages have diverged further from the typical Central Sudanic profile through contact with Ubangian languages.
