Tarokoid is a group of five languages within the Plateau branch of the Niger-Congo family's Benue-Congo languages, spoken in central Nigeria just north of the middle Benue River, in Plateau State's Langtang and Wase local government areas. Following Blench's 2004 classification the group comprises Tarok, also called Yergam, a lingua franca of the southern Plateau region with about 300,000 speakers; Pe, also called Pai, and Sur, also called Myet or Tapshin, each with roughly 5,000 speakers; the severely endangered Yangkam, also called Bashar, with about 50 elderly speakers; and Kwang, also called Kwanka. Tarok has influenced the neighboring Ron languages and Ngas through borrowing.
