The East Kainji languages are a branch of the Kainji languages within the Benue-Congo group of the Niger-Congo family, spoken across a compact area of the Jos Plateau in Nigeria's Kaduna, Plateau and Bauchi states. The branch comprises more than twenty poorly studied languages, including Kurama, Gbiri-Niragu, Jere, Sanga and Lemoro, with roughly 100,000 speakers combined; most of the languages carry four level tones, unlike the three level tones typical of neighboring Middle Belt languages, and many are declining under pressure from Hausa and English.
