The Basa languages are a cluster of eight Kainji languages within the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo family's Atlantic-Congo group, scattered across Nigeria from Niger State in the northwest to Benue State in the south-central region. The communities are dispersed enough that distant groups are unaware of each other, and some settlements near the group's apparent ancestral homeland have already lost the language.
