Nyimang Languages

African Language Families

The Nyimang languages, also called Nyima, are a pair of languages spoken by the Nyimang people of the Nuba Mountains of Sudan: Ama, also called Nyimang, with about one hundred sixty thousand speakers, and Dinik, also called Afitti, with about four thousand speakers as of 2009. The family is placed within the Eastern Sudanic languages, part of the wider Nilo-Saharan grouping, and within Eastern Sudanic its closest relatives appear to be the northern group comprising the Nubian, Nara, and Tama languages. The linguist Claude Rilly published reconstructions of a Proto-Nyima ancestral language in 2010.
