Home›African Language Families›In Group›Turkic, Mongolic and TungusicGroupTurkic, Mongolic and TungusicThis group covers the three language families most often discussed together under the disputed Altaic hypothesis: Turkic, from Turkish and Azerbaijani through the Central Asian and Siberian Turkic languages, Mongolic, Mongolian and its relatives, and Tungusic, Manchu, Evenki and their relatives in eastern Siberia and Manchuria. Whether or not the three share a common ancestor beyond areal contact and centuries of borrowing, comparative linguists conventionally discuss them side by side because of their shared geography and mutual contact. The Altaic hypothesis entity itself, along with every named Turkic, Mongolic and Tungusic sub-branch or extinct relative reported here, is filed in this one group rather than split three ways, since none of the three individually approaches the size that would call for a group of its own.FactsTurkic, Mongolic and TungusicSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonPrimary RegionWell-attestedCentral and Northern Asia 1Own article: proposed as a language family, now rejected by many linguists as a sprachbund from areal contact rather than shared descent; grouping used here for the atlas own areal classification, contested classification disclosed.Turkic, Mongolic and TungusicFilter Results19 entriesParent Family (Classification Tree)AllCommon Turkic (1)Turkic (1)RegionAllAnatolia and the Caucasus, Central Asia and Siberia (1)Central Asia (1)Central Asia, South-central Asia, Iran (1)China (Gansu, Qinghai) (1)Eurasia (1)Far East Russia and northeastern China (2)Mongolia, Northern China, Lake Baikal region (1)Northeastern China (1)Northern Korea and eastern Manchuria (1)Siberia (1)Siberia, Manchuria, Xinjiang (1)The Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Europe (1)Speaker Count BandAll75000.000000 (1)670000.000000 (1)740000.000000 (1)5700000.000000 (1)30000000.000000 (1)108000000.000000 (1)180000000.000000 (1)185775000.000000 (1)Macro-areaAllTurkic, Mongolic and Tungusic (19)BrowseCompareSelect all 19AltaicEurasian Language Families5 linksArgu languagesEurasian Language FamiliesCommon TurkicEurasian Language Families1 linkEwenic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesJurchenic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesKarlukEurasian Language FamiliesKipchakEurasian Language FamiliesMongolicEurasian Language Families2 linksNanaic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesOghuricEurasian Language FamiliesOghuzEurasian Language FamiliesPuyo languagesEurasian Language FamiliesSerbi-Mongolic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesShirongol languagesEurasian Language FamiliesSiberian TurkicEurasian Language FamiliesTungusicEurasian Language Families2 linksTurkicEurasian Language Families4 linksUdegheic languagesEurasian Language FamiliesUral-AltaicEurasian Language FamiliesSources1.
