This group collects members of the Tucanoan (Tukanoan) family, spoken along the Vaupés and Putumayo river systems of the northwestern Amazon in Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador. The Tucanoan-speaking area is well known in linguistic anthropology for its pattern of linguistic exogamy, in which neighboring Tucanoan groups each maintain a distinct language as a marker of clan identity. Placement follows each member's own description naming it Tucanoan or Tukanoan.
