This group collects members of the Siouan family, historically spoken across the Great Plains and the Missouri and Mississippi river valleys, with a separated southeastern outlier branch (Catawban), comprising the Dakotan (Sioux), Dhegihan and Chiwere-Winnebago languages among others, one of the major indigenous language families of the North American interior. Placement follows each member's own description naming it Siouan.
