Penutian

This group collects members of the proposed Penutian macro-family, a grouping whose internal unity is more contested in the comparative literature than most other groups in this subcategory, gathering together California Penutian branches such as the Miwok-Costanoan (Utian) languages and the Yokuts (Yok-Utian) languages, the Tsimshianic languages of the north Pacific coast, and other families historically proposed under the Penutian hypothesis. Placement follows each member's own description naming it Penutian, or, for the Miwok, Ohlone/Costanoan, Yok-Utian, Yokutsan and Tsimshianic entries, the named California-Penutian and north-Pacific-coast-Penutian hypotheses where the description itself does not use the word Penutian.
