South Omotic, also called Aroid, is a small group of languages possibly belonging to the Afroasiatic family, spoken mainly in Ethiopia's South Omo Zone. Five languages make up the group, Aari, Gayil, Hamer-Banna, Karo and Dime, organized into the Aari-Gayil languages, the Hamer-Karo languages, and Dime standing alone. Its classification is highly disputed: Glottolog currently treats South Omotic as a separate family pending further research rather than a confirmed Omotic or Afroasiatic branch, and scholars including Bender and Yigezu have instead proposed a Nilo-Saharan origin with later Omotic influence.
