Demotic Egyptian language

Demotic Egyptian is the stage of the Egyptian language, part of the Afroasiatic family, used from the seventh century BC to the fifth century AD, succeeding Late Egyptian and eventually giving way to Coptic. Its development was strongly shaped by contact with Aramaic and Ancient Greek, and it was written in the Demotic script, a cursive consonant-based writing system. Demotic is best known today from the Rosetta Stone, which presents the same decree in Demotic alongside hieroglyphic and Greek versions and served as a key resource for early decipherment of Egyptian scripts.
